Become Inspired and Uplifted

We've all been there – caught in the comparison trap, riddled with self-doubt, and feeling like we'll never have or be enough. It's perfectly normal. The first step toward change is acknowledging where you are right now and how you're feeling. If you are an empath like me, you absorb negativity more than most people and you need to be mindful about what you are reading, watching, and scrolling through.

So here are a few little tricks that I have found helpful: ask yourself, “What's the opposite of this thought?” and “Does it align with my values?” Speak to yourself the way you would speak to a friend. Every time you catch yourself slipping into negativity, consciously replace it with a more positive thought.

It's time to rethink how you spend your free time. Let's take a look at the messages that you are getting in newspapers, TV, social media, and even e-newsletters. If you watch or read the news, it is usually filled with negativity, gloom and doom, and they are constantly telling people about one scare and tragedy after another.

Take a look at your social media – is it filled with inspiration and positivity, or does it bring you down? Consider your e-newsletters – if they don’t make you feel good, unsubscribe. And your entertainment, from TV shows, movies, and reality TV – should nourish your soul, not drain it.

The good news is that you have options.  Start by using affirmations and making them visible reminders of positivity and encouragement. Surround yourself with inspirational messages. Seek out newsletters, books, and documentaries by amazing people who have overcome hardship or struggles. And remember, just like maintaining a clean home, maintaining a positive media environment isn't a one-and-done deal. Make sure you audit your messages regularly, maybe monthly, whatever is realistic for you and your bandwidth.  Notice how your surroundings and your consumption can change your outlook!

To sum it all up, watch out for your inner critic and negative thoughts.  Train yourself to turn a negative thought into a positive one!  Also take a look at what you are reading, watching, and scrolling through and make the necessary changes to make it inspiring and uplifting.  I hope that if you are an empath, you take some of these actions because your sensitivity makes you more susceptible to absorbing what you receive from your environment and the people around you.
