A Little Bit Every Day
Have you ever noticed how most of your days have a certain sameness to them? Not in a bad way but there are certain things that you do every day, right? Hopefully you brush your teeth twice a day, and eat two or three meals, and maybe you settle in with your favorite shows at the end of the day. How’s that working for ya?
Having healthy habits is important too, like getting exercise. That should go without saying but in case you needed to hear that today, there you go. You pretty much know your daily rhythm. But does that also mean that you are in a rut? Or are you running as fast as you can on a hamster wheel with no relief in sight?
How would you like to be a little better every day? Or working toward your dream life? If you want to multi-task you can make sure you exercise every day with a goal in mind - like increasing your muscle tone or increasing your flexibility.
I love how Tony Robbins put it, “A goal is a dream with a deadline." The best way to make a dream a reality is to work on it a little bit every day. So now you need to set a SMART goal - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time specific. Let’s take the example of writing a book. Let’s make it specific by defining it as a 10 chapter book about ten ways to add flowers into your life. It will be measurable by time, so in this case, let’s say you have a lot on your plate. Twenty minutes per day will yield more than 100 hours in a year. Assuming this book is important to you, 20 minutes per day should be achievable. It would be relevant for a florist, a designer, or anyone who has a passion for flowers. Let’s specify the time and set a deadline for one year from today. Putting it all together, here is the goal - I will write a 10 chapter book about ten ways to add flowers into your life. I will write for 20 minutes per day (that time will fly because you love flowers) by one year from today.
I don’t know about you, but I find if I do something that is really important to me in the first part of the day I know that it will get done. Once you start to interact with your family and leave the house you are faced with work and all of your other responsibilities, and you lose control over what you can accomplish. So do it first thing and give yourself credit for the win - celebrate yourself and your determination to work toward that dream a little every day.
And the best way to make sure you do something every day is to add it to your schedule. If you do not have a morning routine, here’s how it works. Begin by starting your day earlier than usual. Block out some time to plan your day, journal about what’s on your mind, list your top 3 priorities, take a few breaths or maybe even a few minutes of meditation or reading, and get outside for 5 to 10 minutes. This will set the foundation for your day. You will get clear about what you need to do, and what your priorities are. I recommend that you work toward your goal at that time.
